National Radio Day

Today for National Radio Day I wish to present three candidates for your consideration:

1) Orson Welles. The very first actor to play Lamont Cranston (aka The Shadow) on radio. His Mercury Theater Of The Air would produce Radio plays and create “Citizen Kane”. The movie created new filming techniques still used to this day. He would show the world the power of radio as he scared the shit out of the nation with an adaption of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.

2) and 3): Donald Pierson and Ben Toney (pictured) - Two Texans that converted an aging WWII minesweeper into a floating pirate radio station named Radio London.

Although Radio Caroline was the first, Big L put commercial radio on the U.K. map. Today commercial radio is a standard overseas. #nationalradioday
